Many such 3D scanning apps are available for the iPhone, but not all are created equal. Here we’ll take a look at five of the best.

1. Qlone

Qlone allows users to quickly and easily capture 3D models of physical objects. The app uses the device’s camera to take pictures of the object from different angles. There are two main scanning options: Use a Mat and Without a Mat.

With the Use a Mat option, you will first need to print out a special mat on a piece of paper and place the object on it. The images are then processed on the iPhone to create a 3D model. Alternatively, the Without a Mat option (requiring an upgrade to Premium) enables you to scan objects without using a mat; in this case, the images are uploaded to the Qlone Cloud and processed into a 3D model.

You can export your 3D models in popular file formats, including for 3D printing. There’s a choice of resolutions for models: HD, FHD, or 4K. In AR viewing mode, you can even animate 3D models. Qlone also offers a variety of tools for customizing and editing 3D models, making it an ideal platform for 3D designers and artists.

2. Trnio Plus

With Trnio, you can scan and capture objects in high resolution, making it easy to create accurate 3D models that can be used for everything from product design to architecture.

After signing in with your Apple ID, you’ll click the + icon to begin the process. There are three main options: AR Capture, Photos from Camera Roll, and Photos from Files. Choosing either of the last two options will allow you to import and turn the images into 3D models in the app. If you choose the AR Capture option, you will use your phone’s camera to start 3D scanning.

Once you are done, you will be able to see an option to add more details to scans. Thereafter, you will select Process, and your images will start processing. Choose Edit to make edits to your 3D model, such as changing the colors.

The advanced algorithms of Trnio make it easier to produce exceptionally detailed scans, and it even supports color scanning for more realistic results. Best of all, you can use photos you have taken from different angles to create 3D models.

3. Polycam

With this app, you can capture high-quality 3D models of virtually any object with just a few taps. Polycam is perfect for anyone who needs to 3D scan objects for 3D printing, AR/VR applications, or simply to share with friends and family.

After creating an account and launching the app, you can choose what you do: whether you’re a builder, designer, 3D artist, photographer, or just having fun. After selecting a category, you’ll be prompted to allow the app to use your location.

To start 3D scanning, hold your camera still and tap the record button, then move it around to scan the object. Once you are finished, click the Done option to see the images captured by the app. You can review and delete any that aren’t good. Then select Upload to upload your images to their server to convert them to 3D models. When uploading, ensure that you keep your app open until the upload process is finished.

Once your images are processed in the cloud, you’ll see an option to edit the 3D model generated. For example, you can crop, measure, and even extend. A Video setting also helps you see what your 3D model looks like from different angles. You can export, share, or create an album in the cloud to store it when you are done.

4. Heges

Heges uses your device’s built-in camera and sensors to capture data points and create a detailed 3D model. Upon launching the app, you will need to select Go To Settings and allow it to use the iPhone’s camera.

With Heges, you can take pictures of the intended design from different angles. Once you are done, you can preview the 3D scans taken. Heges is perfect for creating models of small objects like coins, jewelry, or sculptures. The app is also great for scanning larger projects like furniture or cars.

Once you are done with 3D scanning, you can export your designs in PLY (format with colors) or even STL format for 3D printing. You can also view your 3D models in AR mode and share them using the built-in Wi-Fi server or iTunes.

5. EM3D

With EM3D, you can 3D scan objects using your iPhone’s TrueDepth camera. Once you download and install the app, you will be able to see a notification for the new Mirror Saver feature; this allows you to view the screen on a different device, making it easier to 3D scan objects in front of you. Also, if you don’t have another device to view your screen, you can download a 3D printable mirror adapter from Thingiverse to change the camera’s direction.

When everything is set, select OK to access the app to start 3D scanning. Like Heges, with EM3D your iPhone needs to have a TrueDepth camera. You can create 360-degree selfies, capture moments in 3D, create full scans that are colored and export them easily with EM3D. It also supports Bluetooth shutter buttons (see our guide on how Bluetooth works). This is important if you would like to 3D scan on a phone tripod.

3D Scan Easily With Your iPhone

It’s now easier than ever to create a 3D model of an object using just your phone. There are several apps available that use the power of photogrammetry to quickly and easily capture the dimensions of an object. The five examples we have covered here will help you capture photos from different angles, process them, and generate 3D models.

Once you have your 3D model, you can view it from any angle, share it with others, or even print it out using a 3D printer. Whether you are an aspiring 3D designer or just looking for a fun way to capture memories, you should try using a 3D scanner app.
