“Because of their ability to be adjusted, these types of beds may help individuals settle into a favorable posture during sleep and avoid positions that may exacerbate their conditions,” says Peter Whang, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Yale Medicine who specializes in spine conditions, explains to Verywell Health.

We researched dozens of adjustable bed frames and evaluated them for available sizes, shipping speed, pricing, additional features, customer service, and return policies.

Based on our research, here are the best adjustable beds on the market today.

The Lineal gives you the option of head and foot elevation in addition to under-bed lighting and full-body massage capabilities. It can be ordered as a split king if you and your partner need different comfort settings. The mattress also has cooling capabilities and minimizes motion transfer for added comfort. While the adjustable base is not returnable, the mattress itself boasts a 180-day no-risk return policy.

Nectar offers white glove delivery, so they will set up your new bed and remove the old one. And if you are still on the fence, you can sleep well at night knowing the brand offers a 50-day risk-free return policy, and will fully refund you if you don’t love it.

Lucid—one of our favorite mattress brands—has created a highly-rated, adjustable bed that is surprisingly feature-heavy considering its low price. Not only can it adjust your head and feet, save your favorite positions with a pre-program feature, but it has built-in USB ports so you can charge your phone and other devices while in bed.

Although you have to assemble it yourself, it should only take about five minutes according to the brand. We like that you can purchase this base with or without a mattress and although the brand maintains that most mattresses should work with it, you might want to read the fine print if you’re worried about your mattress fitting the frame.

Extra features include a soothing resonant-frequency massage with targeted vibration zones so that you can zero in on your body pain and an anti-snore preset. We love that it also features an under-the-bed light and USB ports. This dual adjustable base can be used with two twin mattresses or a single king with options to program accordingly. The only downside is that the Purple Base is non-returnable, though it does come with a 10-year warranty.

An added bonus? Those days when your back is really aching, you can enjoy a head and foot massage with three modes and levels of intensity. It is also dual adjustable, allowing for the use of two twin mattresses or one king.

The base is outfitted with USB charging ports on each side and an under-the-bed light. Additionally, the company offers a lifetime warranty on the bed. The only downside is there is no trial period to test the base and determine if it works best for you.

Almost all major brands of adjustable beds offer head and foot adjustments so we narrowed down our choices by looking at features like price point, additional adjustment options and pre-set options, whether the bed offers a split feature for two users, available sizes, and extra features like under-bed lighting, built-in USB ports, and massaging functions.

What to Look for in an Adjustable Bed

Budget

First and foremost, before making any purchase, you need to consider your budget. Adjustable beds are available at almost every price point. However, if you aren’t ready to invest money in an adjustable bed, or you are only planning on using it temporarily (perhaps while recovering from an injury or during a pregnancy), then you should avoid splurging on one of the higher-priced models.

4.5 to 4.7 stars: These adjustable beds are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them.

4.0 to 4.5 stars: We think these are great adjustable beds, but others are better.

3.5 to 3.9 stars: These adjustable beds are just average.

3.4 and below: We don’t recommend adjustable beds with this rating; you won’t find any on our list.

However, it would be best if you always remembered that investing in your sleep is never a bad idea. While spending a few thousand dollars on one of these bases might be hard to stomach, if you consider how much time you spend in bed and all the benefits you reap from a good night’s sleep, you will realize it is money well spent.

Features

Every adjustable bed will raise or lower your head or feet with the touch of a button. However, most of them offer a lot more than that. Many of the beds on our list have additional options, which include massage, anti-snore settings, and cooling capabilities to name a few. While these additional features might not be necessary to some, they can make an impact on comfort.

The massage feature, for example, can be beneficial to someone who suffers from restless leg syndrome (RLS). People who suffer from RLS can turn the feature on before bedtime to ease symptoms of tingling, sleeplessness, and urges to move the legs.

Adjustability

If you and your significant other have different concepts of comfort, then you should seriously consider a dual adjustable split king. Instead of one king mattress, you would need to purchase two twin mattresses.

Dual adjustable options also allow each person to adjust to their specific needs without impacting their sleep partner. “If you have significant neck arthritis, an adjustable bed that lets you sit more upright can be helpful by positioning your head in a more ergonomic position,” says Dr. Siddharth Tambar, a board-certified rheumatologist with Chicago Arthritis and Regenerative Medicine. “For people with lower back pain, sometimes raising the lower portion of the bed can be helpful by reducing muscle and neural tension on the back,” he adds.

Your Mattress Type

If you want to use your current mattress with your adjustable base, you must make sure the two are compatible. While most adjustable bases can be used with any mattress type, a few are relegated only to foam. Mattresses made with memory foam, latex, or non-innerspring materials are typically capable of working with an adjustable bed. This can be helpful for people who are looking to save money and use the mattress they currently own.

If you’re unsure if your mattress will work for an adjustable bed, you can reach out to the manufacturer and see what they recommend. But keep in mind that some manufacturers might strongly encourage purchasing their mattresses for the most optimal experience when using the adjustable bed.

A 2017 study looking at the impact of adjustable beds on obstructive sleep apnea found that participants who slept in the inclined position saw a reduction of their symptoms, including snoring. Researchers also found that participants experienced less discomfort while sleeping due to the inclined position of the bed.
